Health Matters
e found many recent changes and new informa-
tion on diseases and their treatment options and other health issues that you should be aware of to help you make informed decisions about your health and treatment options.
Researchers reported a finding that links people who drink sugary drinks (sodas, etc.) to a higher risk of premature deaths, especially for women.
Moreover, scientists are researching a possible link between sugar and cancer. They cite an indirect link (excessive sugar leads to obesity/excessive body fat which increase the risk of many common cancers).
These are reasons to eat a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruit, beans, low calorie/no calorie drinks, and healthy snacks.
Though in its infancy, when considering surgery, you should know that more recently, doctors are using 3-D printed organs as a means of preparing to perform surgery on internal organs. This means they have an opportunity to see the 3-D print organ to know exactly what the organ looks like before performing surgery.
Another cancer study found a link between stress and cancer, wherein women who have experienced multiple symptoms of stress have a greater risk of de- veloping ovarian cancer. This gives women a reason to eliminate people and situations from their lives.
On a disturbing note, cancer doctors (oncologists) are being asked by hospital systems, insurance carri- ers, and regulatory agencies to limit the number of “guideline-base treatments” for patients, in spite of knowing that each cancer patient responds differently to chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, transplan- tation, and radiation.
Moreover, additional cancer cell defenses are being examined in laboratories using drugs, gene-targeting agents, and various inhibitors to cell metabolism.
The net effect of the request is a “One-Fits-All” pro- tocol that does not include patient-specific determina- tion of the most effective treatment.
The question we need to ask is, “Will reducing ther- apy options increase cancer deaths?”
This request bears continuous monitoring for infor- mation on your treatment, should you develop cancer.
‘Chosen 365:’
Life’s Journey To Be Shared In Poetry, Music, Storytelling
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
A Tampa woman is going to share her life’s journey this Saturday (November 2nd) dur- ing an evening of storytelling, poetry and music.
Charmaine “C-Maine” Jennings is hosting her first event, “Chosen 365,” at 6 p. m. The event will be held at Inkwell Centre, 2905 N. 50th St., Tampa, 33619.
“Chosen 365” will feature performances by Ms. Pain 2 Purpose, Lakeesha, Brenda G 813, Anubis, Priscilla and Poet She Is. (See advertisement in this issue)
“The ‘Chosen 365’ event is purposed to share my life jour- ney...in order to bring aware- ness and to inspire people to think about how their life sto- ries, lessons and experiences may encourage, heal and pro- mote spiritual growth in oth- ers, Ms. Jennings stated.
In addition to ‘Chosen 365,’ there’s The Chosen Life Journey Book that merges several areas of her personal life and captures the learned lessons and strategies that
CHARMAINE “C-MAINE” JENNINGS
have supported the grief and healing process.
In sharing her life’s jour- ney, Ms. Jennings states that October was Domestic Vi- olence Awareness Month, in addition to being Breast Can- cer Awareness Month, Novem- ber is National Adoption and Life Writing Month.
“Both Domestic Violence and Adoption greatly impact the life of many individuals worldwide and several of the artists involved in the ‘Chosen 365’ event,” she said.
Ms. Jennings was born in West Palm Beach, Florida in
the late 1970s to Jamaican parents, but was adopted by an African American family and engulfed in their culture. “Being adopted came with the negative stigma,” she said. “Children at school would say things like, ‘Well, at least I am not adopted!’ to win the back and forth war of verbal in- sults. My parents, would say those other children are spe- cial, but you were chosen, which makes you unique.”
Charmaine Jennings is a certified professional life coach, writer, performance/in- structional coach, and artisan of creativity. She is an educa- tor by trade, who thoroughly enjoys writing poetry, short stories and songs to express and explore her inner thoughts and experiences.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish she contin- ued to earn a Master’s in Edu- cation and a Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is a wife and mother of two daughters and lives a very adventurous, yet unique life that involves autism, commu- nity outreach, research, self- awareness, and discovery.
