Dr. Shirley Berekely
says that “hymns are the treas- ure of the church.” Many hymns were composed as a re- sult of dire circumstances that we sometimes encounter. Such is the case with the classic hymn It Is Well With My Soul.
The composer, Horatio Spafford, a prominent Amer- ican lawyer and Presbyterian church elder, lost his toddler son in the tragic Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Unfor- tunately, his loss continued when his remaining children died after being shipwrecked on a voyage to Europe when Spafford sent them ahead to later join them.
In spite of this incredibly grief-stricken moment, he could still pen the lyrics:
When peace like a river Attendeth my way And sorrows like sea
billows roll Whatever my lot
Thou has taught me to say It is well
It is well
With my Soul
It Is Well With My Soul has encouraged the countless masses as it speaks of hope during the darkest of days and faith to rebound through life’s tragedies. This hymn knows no cultural boundaries, and re- mains one of the most enduring hymns ever written.
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so it is well with my soul
