Auto Dealer Pleads Guilty To Nearly $2 Million Money Laundering Scam
A 52-year- 0ld auto dealer entered a guilty plea to money laundering con- spiracy. He is facing a maxi- mum sentence of 20 years in fed- eral prison.
Raymond
Rodriguez, of
Tampa, was ini-
tially scheduled
for sentencing
on Thursday. However, the hearing was rescheduled and set to take place on September 26th at 10:30 a.m., before U. S. District Judge Mary S. Scriven.
According to court documents Rodriguez and his wife owned and operated Rodriguez Auto Wholesale, 4116 N. Florida Avenue, in Tampa. Between 2009 and December 2012, Rodriguez admit- ted to acting alone and with others, and knowingly sold vehicles to individuals who had paid with money obtained from illegal nar- cotics sales and from income refund tax fraud.
Rodriguez agreed to accept large cash payments for the vehi- cles without filing the required forms with the Internal Revenue Service. He also agreed to place vehicles in the names of straw buy- ers.
By doing so, law enforcement and other government agencies would not be aware of the true owners of the vehicles or the illegal money used to purchase them, officials said.
Rodriguez also promised purchasers that he would keep a lien on certain vehicles, despite receiving payment in full. In this man- ner, if the vehicles were seized by law enforcement, he could reclaim the vehicles and return them to the purchaser or their family mem- bers.
Officials said that during the 4-year time frame, Rodriguez and his co-conspirators laundered at least $1,751,648 in illegal drug and false federal income tax returns through Rodriguez Auto Wholesale.
