Local Harry Belafonte Talks About His Time With Dr. King During Lecture
Civil rights activist and entertainer, Harry Belafonte was the guest lecturer at the Marshall Center on the campus of the University of South Florida. Belafonte was on the campus on Tues- day, January 16, 2018 to talk with those in attendance about the times he shared with Dr. Mar- tin Luther King, Jr.
Civil rights activist, actor and musician Harry Belafonte was the speaker for the lecture series at USF.
Dr. Navita James, left, was with her former student, Ravin Lawson, right, when he presented the portrait he painted to Harry Belafonte. Belafonte, 90, said he would sign the painting and put it up for auction to raise funds for USF’s Africana Studies Program.
Jeannie Vernette, Cedric Carter, LaRoyce Carter and Annette Drewwood attended the lecture.
Atty. Arthenia Joyner, right, enjoyed the evening with two out-of-town guests: Alvinnetta Burka of Chicago, IL, and Lydia Rainer of Fairfax, VA.
Family and friends came together to surprise Mrs. Rhonean Blakeman. She was about to meet her favorite celebrity, Harry Belafonte. Mrs. Blakeman, seated, is shown with: Denise Blakeman, her daughter; Rita Tailsman, Edwina Davis, niece; Maya Richmond, and Linda Stewart.
Those at the reception following the lecture to meet Mr. Belafonte were: Gwen Newton, Burt Newton, Daryl Crawley and Bridget Rocket.
Also at the lecture were: Doris Dann, Richard Amore, Lynn Amore and Wynette Nelson.
