 Atty. Benjamin Crump:
Tampa Omega Ball Speaker Fights For Justice
Attorney Benjamin Crump, America’s leading Civil Rights lawyer, will bring his message of the need for fairness and color-blind justice in the country’s courts to Tampa this weekend. Atty. Crump will be the keynote speaker at the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Pi Iota Chap- ter’s Annual Founders Ball Awards Gala. The sold-out event will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018, 6 p. m. at the Hilton Tampa Airport Hotel, 2225 N. Lois Avenue. Albert Lee is Basileus of the Pi Iota Chapter.
Atty. Crump’s latest high-profile case involves 47- year-old Michael Drejka, the white man who on July 19, 2018 shot and killed African American Markeis Mc- Glockton, 28, in Clearwater, Florida. The tragedy began with a dispute over a handicap parking space. The men of Omega have invited the
can to chair FSU’s College of Law Board of Directors, Atty. Crump was the 73rd president of the National Bar Associa- tion.
He came to national prominence in 2012 when he represented the family of 17- year-old Trayvon Martin. White, Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot and killed Martin in Sanford, Florida. Thus, Martin became the first high-profile victim of Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” Law. Atty. Crump has pushed the Florida State Legislature to amend the law, saying: “If it can be shown that you are the aggressor (in a confrontation that turns deadly) you should not get the immunity of Stand Your Ground.” He also advocates for more responsible gun own- ership.
Atty. Crump has recov- ered millions of dollars for his
clients. He has represented families of several well-known cases: Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; ten of the thirteen women who were vic- tim in the Holtzclaw Okla- homa City Police rape case; and the precedent-setting Robbie Tolan U. S. Supreme Court case.
