Brooklyn DA Stalls As Park Gang-Rape Case Falls Apart
Three of the teens were taken into custody. All of the 5 except 1 has been released to await a grand jury verdict.
BROOKLYN, NY -- The Brooklyn District Attorney’s of- fice is stalling for time in the crumbling case against five teens accused of gang rape — as the alleged victim’s dad was questioned by police again on Thursday evening.
Prosecutors had until Friday to secure a grand jury indict- ment, otherwise the teen sus- pects could be released without bail.
“Because we are determined to get to the truth about what happened in that park, we need more time to investigate this complex case and gather more evidence. So, therefore, we have consented to the defendants’ re- lease,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson in a statement.
Three of the teens had al- ready posted bail. The fifth sus- pect, 15-year-old Shaquell Cooper, will not be released from jail because he’s still being held on a different case from October, in which he allegedly punched a person.
The DA’s office now has six months to build a case for a grand jury. The Post first re- ported on Thursday that the case was falling apart because of credibility issues with the al- leged victim’s father.
Meanwhile, the father of the alleged victim was brought in by detectives for another round of questioning Thursday night.
He insisted earlier in the day that he wasn’t having sex with his daughter when the five teenage suspects showed up, as two of the young men have claimed.
Two of the five teens ar- rested for the alleged rape insist they had consensual sex with the young woman. They also claim her drunk father was hav- ing sex with her when they came upon them.
NYC Commissioner Brat- ton said Thursday that cell- phone footage taken just before the alleged rape is a “significant piece of evidence.”
“I believe it’s 9 to 11 seconds,” the top cop said. “I believe it’s been retrieved from one of the cellphones carried by one of the five young men that are being investigated in this matter.”
Relatives of the five teenage suspects said the video shows the 18-year-old woman with her pants down as her father stands nearby.
The five teens have been charged with rape, forcible compulsion, criminal sex act and sex abuse.

Arizona Governor Oks
CHICAGO, IL --- Chicago on Thursday released video footage of a fatal Chicago po- lice shooting of a Black teenager in 2013 after a court ruling, as protesters renewed criticism of Mayor Rahm Emanuel for the handling of police killings.
Images from neighborhood surveillance cameras showing the killing of Cedrick Chat- man, 17, in January 2013 had been sealed under a protective order.
One 10-second segment of video shows two officers chas- ing Chatman, who then runs around a corner out of sight. It next shows an officer drawing his gun, followed by an image of Chatman on the ground. An officer stands with one foot on Chatman before emer- gency crews arrive.
Another video appears to show Chatman hit while run- ning.
The decision allowing the videos' release comes with Emanuel and the police de- partment already under pres- sure over a fatal 2014 police shooting of another teenager.

The video of that killing was not released until November.
For weeks protesters have been demanding Mayor Rahm Emanuel step down over his handling of the 2014 police killing of Laquan Mc- Donald, 17.
Black pastors and commu- nity leaders said they would boycott Emanuel's annual Martin Luther King prayer breakfast on Friday to protest the city's handling of police shootings.
Lawyers for Chatman's mother, who is suing the city over her son's death, say the videos contradict police state- ments.
To Call Out Deadbeat Dads
ARIZONA --- Fathers in Ari- zona who aren't delivering court-ordered child support payments may discover their mugs plastered all over social media soon. Arizona governor Doug Ducey this week un- veiled a bizarre new name-and- shame campaign to publicly mock so-called “deadbeat dads,” a crackdown on "the worst of the worst" parents who fail to make child support payments.
The hope is that the public shaming will make some of them pay up and give other dads (and moms) second
thoughts about evading child support. Ducey, a father of three, called out "deadbeat dads" in his State of the Union address on Monday, saying he was troubled by the high num- ber of vulnerable children in Arizona.
