Someone To Help
accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Those who cannot see Him or know Him will not accept Him. When you are blind of the things of God and do not know the ways of God, it is dif- ficult to accept Him. People struggle with receiving the Spirit of God because they cannot handle Him with their senses as they did with Jesus. The Spirit who will come will live in you and with you. This is a twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week Helper.
Verses 18, 19 - I will not leave you as or- phans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
God does not desire for you to be left alone anymore. You will always be cared for by a loving parent and will never be left to fend for yourself. The world will not see Him
anymore, but those who love Him and keep His commands will. Although He would die, He will be resurrected. As long as He lives, you will live.
Verses 22, 23 - Then Judas (not Judas Iscar- iot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
Jesus goes back to the original saying to answer Judas’ question. Jesus shows Himself to those who love Him and are willing to keep His commands. If you want to see Jesus, then you must love Him and do what He says. Many people are not seeing Jesus and His glory because they are not doing what He has asked. One of the sim- plest commands that many find to be the hardest is to love one another!
Verse 26 - But the Ad- vocate, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of every- thing I have said to you.
Jesus identifies the Advo- cate who will come to help us. The purpose of the Holy Ghost is to remind you of the words that Jesus has spoken and to teach you all things pertaining to the Father. People limit the use of the Holy Ghost when they think that it is only to make you shout in the church and speak in tongues.
Life will be more fulfilling when you learn how to rely on the Helper God has sent to you. The Helper will teach you and remind you how to respond when you are being overwhelmed and overtaken. The Helper, the Advocate, will help you and advocate for you when you have sinned and come short of God’s glory.
You have a Helper to help you navigate through life’s ob- stacles. You have a Helper who will be with you and in you to make sure that you continue to represent the Kingdom of God.
This life of righteousness is a simple yet complex life to live. It is so simple that it is confusing to many who are trying to live up to the stan- dard of God. Because so many were not being successful at their effort to live up to the commandments of God, He decided to send His Son to teach us how to live in this world. Because we do not al- ways get it right, the Son promised to send us some help. John 14:15-26 cap- tures the promise of Christ to His disciples and the church.
Verse 15 - “If you love me, keep my commands.
Jesus places emphasis on loving Him and keeping His commands. He repeats over
and over that if you love Him, you will keep the commands He has given. Love is not what you say, it is what you do.
Verse 16 - And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another ad- vocate to help you and be with you forever.
Jesus here informs the disciples that He will petition the Father to send an advocate to us. This promise comes right after being told to love Him. The advocate whom Jesus is going to send will not be a temporary helper; He will come and leave. The advocate will be with you forever.
Verse 17 - The Spirit of truth. The world cannot
