The Introduction:
The celebration of Black History was brought
into existence by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, in 1926.
Dr. Woodson was an American historian, author, and journalist. Dr. Wood-
son was also the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He
was one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora, including African American history.
Dr. Woodson is also credited with being the founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916.
In February 1926, he launched the celebration of "Negro History Week." This celebration grew in the celebration taking place for the entire month of
February. He selected the month of February because it was the birth month of both Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. This year, our theme focuses on success stories of the last 20 years, beginning in 2000. We will visit politics, the arts, inventions, entertainment, and other topics
during the month.
We will begin with politics, focusing on both local history as well as national history.
What is History?
History is the study of events and accomplishments of the past. Black History is also the study of the contributions, achievements, and accomplishments
of Blacks that improved the life of all mankind. Negro History Week became Black History Month in 1976 under President Gerald Ford. For African Americans, history is a never-ending bridge that connects the present to the past. And, it will continue to grow for as long as new accomplishments are made on a daily basis. Walk with us as we take a journey through the past 20 years of our history. Resilient, Strong, Determined..Black Excellence.
