Warren Hope Dawson Elementary School
To Open In Riverview
Attorney Warren Dawson stands in front of an elementary school named in his honor. The school is slated to open next month.
Our vision is: “Building “hope” for our future, one child at a time.”
When the 2017-2018 school year begins on August 10, 2017, hundreds of chil- dren from the Riverview area will have a new elementary school. That is when the doors of Warren Hope Dawson Ele-
mentary, Hillsborough County's only new public school this year, will open for the first time.
The school is named after Warren Hope Dawson, the veteran practicing Tampa Attorney who specializes in civil rights and labor rela- tions. Dawson earned an un- dergraduate degree from Florida A&M University in 1961, served as an officer in the U. S. Army from 1961 to 1963, graduated with a law degree from Howard Univer- sity in 1966, admitted to The Florida Bar in 1967.
Beginning in 1974 and for 27 years thereafter, he cham- pioned desegregation of the public-school system in Hills- borough County, Florida – one of the nation’s largest school districts. Thank you, Mr. Dawson, for your serv- ice to our community.
This $20-million facility, paid for through impact fees, is being built to alleviate crowding at nearby schools and accommodate future needs in a region of burgeon- ing growth.
In addition to new en- rollees and School Choice transfers, Dawson will draw students from Collins,
Boyette Springs, Sessums, Stowers and Summerfield el- ementary schools. It is ex- pected to open with about 450 students in grades pre-K to 5 and will enroll 950 at ca- pacity.
At almost 100,000 square feet, Dawson Elementary School will have 48,810- square-foot, carpeted class- rooms; 3,418-square-foot media center; cafeteria, stage and commercial kitchen; and rooms for music and art.
It will feature two play- grounds; two courts; pol- ished-concrete floors; a covered bus ramp; two clin- ics; electronic security; state- of-the-art morning show room; central courtyard; and a wireless campus accommo- dating mobile computer labs with laptops provided to stu- dents for classroom use. This school will have a robotics club and a steel-drum band. And the art room will have a kiln.
Dawson Elementary is lo- cated on 15 acres south of Big Bend Road and east of Balm Riverview Road at 12961 Boggy Creek Drive, Riverview, in the community of Triple Creek.
