Candidates To Continue Their Strategy As They Head To November
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
While candidates on Tues- day’s ballot have been very busy over the past few years and months, several of them have to continue on the road to November.
Gwendolyn “Gwen” Myers and Henry “Shake” Washington are two of the candidates who will have to reach out to the voters until the General Election, Novem-
ber 3rd.
Myers was a candidate for
County Commission District 3, while Washington was a candidate for Hillsborough County School Board, District 5.
Myers eased by opponent Thomas Scott to earn the right to face a Republican op- ponent in November. She re- ceived 7,164 votes (26.5%), while Scott received 6,941 (25.7%) of the votes cast in District 3.

In the Hillsborough County School Board crowded District 5 race, Washington received 14,331 (44.5%) votes, while his closest opponent, Tamara Shamburger re- ceived 7,641 (23.7%) votes. Since he did not receive at least 51% of the ballots cast, Washington will face Shamburger in a run-off in the November General Elec- tion.

Tuesday was historic. It was 100 years ago, August 18th, that women earned the right to vote in the United States. Also, a woman has not held that seat since Sylvia Roderiguez Kimbell in the early 1990s.
Mrs. Myers, who an- nounced that she planned to run for this seat back in 2013, said, “I give all praises to God for leading me through this ex- perience – something I had
not done before.”
She said the race is all
about the people and she stayed focused. She expressed gratitude to her opponents for running a clean race.
“I want to make sure Dis- trict 3 looks like all other dis- tricts in this county. I’m reaching out to Democrats to make sure they vote in No- vember.”
Washingt0n said he plans to continue the path he has been on – meeting with the people, fighting for the schools, parents and staff.
“This is not about ‘I’, it’s about ‘we.’ We’re reaching 0ut to other organizations, sorori- ties, fraternities, NAACP, Urban League, so we can get this done. We’ve got to get in- volved in the schools in Dis- trict 5. Every school reflects the community it’s in. We’re going to continue to push the agenda we’ve set out.”
