Mrs. Inez ‘Liz’ York Cohen was in Tallahassee two weekends ago for the Florida State University (FSU) Alumni Association Spring Alumni Awards. She was there to accept the “Grads Made Good” Award. Mrs. York Cohen was nominated by the president of the FSU National Alumni Association.
“I was both honored and humbled on Friday, April 9th in Tallahassee, to receive the prestigious FSU ‘Grads Made Good’ Award. This award began in 1974 at Florida State University and has only been awarded to 100 FSU Alumni who have made outstanding contributions in their career field as well as being recog- nized at the national and in- ternational level for their accomplishments.”
In addition to the recog- nition, her picture is on the Hall of Fame Wall in the FSU Alumni Center. Mrs. Cohen knows her parents the late Ellis and Dorothy York are smiling from above. She’s always re- minded of the time her mother wanted to attend Florida State when it was an all-female school, but was de- nied because of the color of her skin. In 1972, Mrs. Cohen was admitted as a freshman. She has been awarded numerous times by the university.
The ceremony was a vir- tual event which was live- steamed. Due to COVID precautions, the audience was limited to the three hon- orees, the university’s presi- dent and the university’s board members, including trustees, founda- tion and alumni. Each hon- oree was allowed to bring two

The “Grads Made Good” award was developed in 1974 to recognize alumni who have made significant contri- butions nationally or interna- tionally. Each year the university recognizes and awards only three alumni for this award.
