On Monday, August 5th, Mayor Jane Castor and members of the Mayor’s African American Advisory Council (MAAAC) presented a scholarship to a recent gradu- ate. The scholarship was named in the honor of a long- time city employee.
The student chosen as the first recipient of the “Carla Lewis Scholarship” is Kierra Jenkins. Ms. Jenkins is a recent graduate of King High School. Among those on hand for the presentation were her parents, Ms. Yvonne Jenk- ins and Michael Jackson.
She was chosen as the re- cipient because she received several accolades and partici- pated in numerous extracur- ricular activities while in high school.
The scholarship is named in honor of Ms. Carla Lewis, a Tampa native and longtime city employee. Ms. Lewis passed away July 26, 2018, after a short battle with
cancer. Ms. Lewis’ parents, brother, and several other family members were on hand for the presentation as well.
During her 15-year tenure with the City of Tampa, Ms. Lewis served as the City’s Neighborhood Liaison. In 2007, she accepted the addi- tional responsibility of serving as the liaison between the MAAAC members and the Mayor’s Office.
T. R. Coverson, current president of MAAAC said, “I had the privilege of knowing and working alongside Carla Lewis when I became a MAAAC member two years ago. Carla never tired. We are honored to have known Carla and would like her pas- sion, drive, and love to be passed on in the form of this scholarship named in her honor.”
The organization plans to make the scholarship to a graduating senior every year. Members also hope to in- crease the award amount as well.
