   Congresswoman To Recognize Women Leaders

On Wednesday, February 21st,U. S. Representative Kathy Castor will pay tribute to three African American women. The recognition is part of the Black History Month cel- ebration.
Each year, Rep. Castor recognizes individuals from the Tampa community who have made lasting contributions lo- cally and nationally.
The honorees are: Mrs. Joli Cooper-Nelson, Na- tional President of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.; Dr. Paulette C. Walker, Immediate Past Na- tional President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and At- torney Carolyn House Stewart, Immediate Past In- ternational President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
The program will take place at 10 a.m. at the Robert W. Saunders Public Library, 1505 N. Nebraska Avenue.
Mrs. Joli Cooper-Nel- son, of Tampa, is the 25th Na- tional President of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Prior to being
elected president, Mrs. Cooper-Nelson was the Na- tional Vice President and has served as Regional Director, Regional Secretary-Treasurer and Regional Program Chair- person of the Southeastern Re- gion.
Mrs. Cooper-Nelson is a member of New Mt. Zion Mis- sionary Baptist Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Mrs. Cooper-Nelson
earned her Bachelor of Busi- ness Administration in Finance degree from the University of Notre Dame. She continued her education at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, where she earned her Master’s degree in Business
Administration.
Mrs. Cooper-Nelson is a
founding member of CSW Pri- vate Equity Investments, LLC, a New York based private eq- uity firm.
Dr. Paulette C. Walker
is the Immediate Past Presi- dent of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She became a member of the organization while attending Michigan State University. She served as the 25th National President of the organization.
Dr. Walker retired in July 2011, Director of undergradu- ate programs and internship in the College of Education at the University of South Florida.
Dr. Walker is the co-au- thor of the book, “We Can
Have Better Urban Schools.” Also, she has served in several capacities as an edu- cator, including classroom teacher, middle school and high school counselor, director of counseling, Assistant Princi- pal and district-wide supervi- sor of state/federal projects.
Dr. Walker received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education from Michigan State University, her Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling from The Univer- sity of Michigan, and her Doc- tor of Education in Administration and Supervi- sion from The University of Michigan.
She is an active member of Mt. Olive AME Church, where she serves on the Trustee Board.
Attorney Carolyn House Stewart is the Imme- diate Past 28th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. With the election to the office, she be- came the first attorney to lead the organization. She also makes history as the first pres- ident to serve a full term in the
Sorority’s second century. Attorney Stewart be- came a member of the organi- zation when she was initiated at the University of South
Florida in the 1970s.
Atty. Stewart launched
her career as an attorney more than 30 years ago.
She received Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Univer- sity of South Florida. She con- tinued her education at the University of South Carolina Law Center, where she earned her Juris Doctor Degree.
She was recently honored as a trailblazer. She was hon- ored for being the First African-American female assis- tant state attorney in Hillsbor- ough County, First African-Americanfemalehired by a Fortune 500 in Tampa (Jim Walter Corp., 1978), First African–American female from Hillsborough appointed to The Florida Board of Bar Examin- ers.
She is a member of Allen Temple A.M.E. Church with her husband, Atty. Delano Stewart, and her daughter, Atty. Delsha Stewart.
