West Tampa Group Prepares For Summer
The West Tampa Alliance, a community-based non-profit group, is preparing an assort- ment of activities and pro- grams to engage young people over the summer.
Heem Baisden and Dee Jackson, leaders of the group, report that there is still a dire need for more mentors and local business owners to get involved.
“Our goal is to make sure we don’t have a repeat of past summers,” said Jackson.
“It is our responsibility, and the responsibility of the entire community, that we protect our greatest assets: our children.”
If anyone wants to volun- teer their time or services this summer to help the young people, call (813) 516-9333, or 391-7786.
Elementary Students To
Showcase Talents
Students from four Hills- borough County Schools will showcase their talent in the Under the Lights, an Ed-Ven- ture Showcase.
The event will take place on Monday, June 1st, 6 p.m., in the auditorium at Blake High School, 1701 N. Blvd. The schools participating in the event are B. T. Washington, Just Elementary, Miles Ele- mentary, and Potter Elemen- tary Schools.
The students will demon- strate their talents in such events as martial arts, poetry, step, and modern band per- formances. Additionally, rep- resentatives from all four schools will join forces to cheer their peers on.
The Hillsborough County School District is working the Hillsborough Out-of-School Time (H.O.S.T) program to sponsor this event.
Ed-Venture was developed two years ago to add signifi- cant time at the end of the school day for extracurricular activities such as sports and musical arts.

Pest Control Company Specializes In Tent Fumigation
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Wally Forde’s future as the owner of a pest control company came from an experi- ence he shared with a family member.
Forde’s uncle owned All- state Pest Control, and he worked with him for two years. During that short period, he learned a lot about the busi- ness, but before he’d turn in that direction, he first operated a business in West Palm Beach that sold water beds.
“Selling waterbeds proved to not be something consistent, and I needed something that would be a year-round job.
“I realized after working with my uncle that eventually I’d own my own company. That turned out to be a great idea.”
Forde said to do this kind of work, you have to know how to deal with different varieties of insects and what’s most ef- fective to get rid of them.
“You need to have a degree or 3-years work experience with a company, and then take the state exam.
“I specialize in tent fumiga- tion, and started out with the bulk of my business being wholesale. I’d do the work, but someone else got the credit. After suffering a stroke 3 years ago, that’s when I started building my company, AWF Fumigators, Incorporated.”
Forde’s company has res-

idential and commercial cus- tomers, and employs about 5 people.
“Because this is seasonal work, the staff may vary from time to time. We go hard from May to September, because that’s the peak of the termite season. After that, things slow down.”
Forde said he started out as a salesman before going out with the crews to tent homes and buildings.
“I also went to school to get the technical part of the job straight, and everything else was pretty much on the job training.
“Right now, I’m trying to establish a base in Tampa. From this area, I serve virtually the entire state.”
Forde said he’s looking forward to working with more people and he’s offering a tent special.
“My customers get whole- sale prices, and I offer dis- counts to the elderly as well as financing.
“Before I do any job, I do a vigorous inspection to find out what I’m dealing with and what I’ll need to eradicate the problem.”
