Health
Brighten the holidays by making your health and safety a priority. Take steps to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy—and ready to enjoy the holidays.
3 Fasten seat belts while driving or rid- ing. Always buckle your chil- dren in the car. Buckle up every time, no matter how short the trip and encourage
passengers to do the same.
6 Be smoke-free. Avoid smoking and second- hand smoke. If you have to smoke, do not do it around your children and, always smoke outside. When you smoke indoors, the smoke gets into the furniture, rugs and everything else in your home and never leaves. So, you and your family are breathing smoke even when
there is nothing lit.
4 Manage stress. Give yourself a break if you feel stressed out, over- whelmed, and out of control. Some of the best ways to manage stress are to find sup- port, connect socially, and get
plenty of sleep.
7 Don’t stay in indoor malls too long. As much as you like shopping at the mall, continuous breath- ing of re-circulated air is not good for you. Also, breathing in fabric dyes and other tex- tile inside the stores is not good. So, plan where you are going, and time yourself. Two hours max is best for your
health.
Park the car and 5 walk. Instead of trying to find the closest parking space, park the car as far as possible and get your walking in. It helps your heart and helps to burn calories with a
purpose.
8 Monitor children. Keep potentially danger- ous toys, food, drinks, house- hold items, and other objects
out of children’s reach.
9
Wash hands often 1 to help prevent the spread of germs. It’s flu season. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds.
2It’s Florida, but you must stay dry and warm. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: light layers,
gloves, hats, and scarves.
Practice fire safety.
Most residential fires occur during the winter months, so don’t leave fire- places, space heaters, food cooking on stoves, or candles unattended. Have an emer- gency plan and practice it reg- ularly.
10 Prepare food safely. Remem- ber these simple steps: Wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper tempera- tures and refrigerate foods
promptly.
11 Eat healthy, stay active. Eat fruits and vegetables. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat, salt, and sugar. Also, be ac- tive for at least 21⁄2 hours a week and help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a
day.
