Activist Presented Director’s Community Leadership Award

A Tampa community ac- tivist was presented the FBI Tampa Division’s 2018 Di- rector’s Community Leader- ship (DCLA) Award. The presentation took place last Friday, March 8th.
In May, Freddy Barton will travel to Washington, D. C., to represent Safe & Sound Hillsborough for a formal ceremony and to be person- ally recognized by F.B.I. Di- rector Christopher Wray.
The Federal Bureau of In- vestigations (F.B.I.) recog- nizes the achievements of both individuals and organi- zations for their contribu- tions to crime and violence education and prevention within their communities. The F.B.I. began the public recognition program in 1990.
Barton is the Executive Director of Safe & Sound Hillsborough. A community- based organization, Safe &

Barton is a member of the Hillsborough County Branch NAACP, a mentor for youth who were recently released
from the juvenile detention center, the lead for the City of Tampa’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative, and he serves on the State Attorney’s Community Advisory Board.

Sound Hillsborough works with policy makers, civic and business leaders, residents, and other organizations to help reduce violence in the Tampa Bay Area.
In an effort to infuse the youth with positive out- comes, Barton has launched several initiatives, including transforming two dormant
recreation facilities into thriving afterschool and summer program sites. For the past 6 years, Barton has been a participant in the “Suit Up & Show Up,” youth male empowerment confer- ence. The program pairs local leaders with at-risk teenagers to teach them how to dress for success and how
