The 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade Combined With Juneteenth Celebration
Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway Program Awarded $2 Million to Deserving Students throughout the 2020 Football Season
PLANO, Texas, — Dr Pep- per celebrated the culmina- tion of its 12th annual Tuition Giveaway Program by awarding three student winners with $125,000 each and three runners-up with $75,000 each in tuition during the College Football Conference Championship weekend.
Dr Pepper awarded even more student finalists with tuition through competition- based giveaways and sur- prise virtual giveaways featuring friends of the brand including YouTube sensation Dude Perfect and five-time American Music Award Winner Kane Brown. A total of $2 mil- lion in tuition was distrib- uted this college football season – the largest give- away in the program’s 12- year history.
Six students were chosen to participate in the annual Dr Pepper head-to-head Throw Competition based on personal stories of funding needed to achieve their aca- demic dreams. Over the weekend, the students com- peted for a total of $600,000 in tuition by throwing the greatest num- ber of footballs into an over-
sized Dr Pepper can in 30 seconds. Recorded footage of the competition was cap- tured at the Dude Perfect fa- cilities following all guidance provided from health author- ities and government agen- cies, and aired during the BIG12, ACC and SEC confer- ence championship games. Dr Pepper and FOX then awarded four students from the BIG10 and PAC12 with $50,000 each as FOX broadcasters participated in a throw competition on their behalf. These throws aired during the BIG10 and PAC12 conference championship games.
In addition to the Throw Competition, Dr Pepper awarded $850,000 in tuition through a series of virtual giveaways involving ‘small’ games with big prizes and bogus trivia competitions. To help Dr Pepper surprise and delight fans with these tu- ition awards, the brand teamed up with Dude Per- fect, former NFL player and lead actor as the Sherriff of Fansville Brian Bosworth, country music artist Kane Brown, the Dallas Cowboys and Justin Guarini as Lil’ Sweet to gift deserving stu- dents.
Krystie S. from Jack- sonville, Florida, studying Biological Systems Engineer- ing at Florida A&M Univer- sity, was among the virtual winners of the Dr Pepper Tu- ition Giveaway Program.
The Annual City of Tampa MLK Parade is post- poned until Saturday, June 19, 2021, combined with the observance of Juneteenth
The Dr. Martin Luther King Parade Foundation, after careful deliberation, has made the decision to post- pone the 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Parade. The postponement comes as a safety precaution due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The City of Tampa’s pa- rade will take place on Satur- day, June 19, 2021, in combination with the obser- vance of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day.
Juneteenth is the nation’s annual celebration of the abolishment of the awful practice of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth 2021 follows a year of protests, calls for police and criminal justice reform and a long overdue commitment to address the systemic racism that still plagues our country.
The decision to postpone did not come easy. The Foun- dation wanted the new date to be as significant and rele- vant as the MLK Holiday and Dr. King himself. June- teenth, also known as, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, signifies a beginning to the journey of freedom and equality Dr. King fought for throughout his life.
“Our primary concerns were for the safety of our Pa- rade participants, the safety of our community, and up- holding the integrity of Mar- tin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy”, said Foundation President, Robert Scott, Jr. “We are happy that we are able to address all these con- cerns with our final decision.”
The parade will start as usual at Cuscaden Park (2900 N. 15th Street Tampa, FL 33605), beginning 11 a. m., and end at Middleton High School. As always, the parade will be a free, family- friendly event and all are welcome.
