Three years ago, Ralph Smith founder and CEO of Computer Mentors, hosted the first Teen Business Competition. The event was such a success that Smith has continued as an annual event, which is spon- sored by Connectwise.
This year, the Competition will be held the weekend of Feb- ruary 19-21, 2016. It will take place at the Ybor City Campus of Hillsborough Community Col- lege. Smith said, “The Teen Competition offers teenagers an opportunity to explore entrepre- neurship in an atmosphere filled with learning, exploring, excite- ment, fun, and yes, hard work.
“We will select 20 teenagers who will be placed into four teams of five for the competi- tion. The challenges will begin on Friday and conclude on Sun- day afternoon.”
The competition will be judged by a panel of “Angel In- vestors,” and the winners will re- ceive cash prizes in the form of gift cards. However, Smith said, “No teenager will go home empty-handed. Each participant

will at least take home an iPad Mini for competing.”
The competition allows high school youngsters between the ages of 14 and 18 a chance to cre- ate businesses, and acquire the skills needed to be successful. The competition focuses on three areas of core competen- cies: collaboration, creative thinking, and communication.
The competition is broken down in five stages: (1) The Big Idea, creative problem-solving; (2) Treasure Map, Concept
Modeling; (3) Show Me The Money, Marketing and Creat- ing Value; (4) MVP, Getting Feedback and learning from mistakes; and (5) The Pitch, organizing ideas and communi- cating clearly.
To participate in the competi- tion, the teens must live in Hills- borough County, meet the age requirement; and be enrolled in high school.
“The competition also plants the seed in their minds that they can be successful, whether they choose traditional employment or entrepreneurship. We en- courage all of the teens inter- ested to participate,” Smith said.
In addition to the contest- ants, the competition is also in need of 30 volunteers to assist with the program.
These experts will kick off each challenge motivating the competitors. The challenge also needs 20 coaches. Each coach will be assigned to a team for one of the five challenges.
Anyone interested in volun- teering can contact Computer Mentors at (813) 236-1191; or register on the website at www.computermentors.org.
