Man Jailed After Cousin Dies In Bulletproof Vest Test
Elderly Woman Killed In Three-Car Accident

A 24-year-old man was taken into custody after he al- legedly shot and killed his cousin. The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m., Saturday, in the 2400 block of E. Gordon Street.
According to the Tampa Police Department, officers responded to the residence in reference to a shooting. The officers located 23-year-old Joaquin Mendez outside of the home with a gunshot wound to his chest.
When the officers entered the residence, they found blood and a bulletproof vest. The officers interviewed 24- year-old Alexandro Garibaldi, who allegedly said he heard a gunshot and found

Mendez outside with a gun- shot wound.
However, another person at the residence told police that Mendez was sitting in a chair when he put the bullet- proof vest on and “wondered aloud whether it still worked.”
The witness also told po- lice that at that point, Garibaldi pulled a handgun, stated, ‘Let’s see,’ and fired at the vest while Mendez was still wearing it. Mendez was transported to a local hospital, where he died as a result of his injury.
Garibaldi was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter with a weapon and being a felon in posses- sion of a firearm. He is being held without bond at the Hills- borough County Sheriff’s Of- fice.
A 66-year-old woman died in a traffic accident Fri- day evening. The accident took place on Gandy Blvd., and San Martin Blvd., in Pinellas County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Ms. Sharyn Lee Forbes, of Tampa, was driving her 1999 Toyota Rav 4 eastbound in the inside lane. Ms. Irene Wang, 30, of St. Petersburg, was driving her 2013 Mazda 3 in the inside lane west- bound. Scott Kirk, 52, of Palm Harbor, was also driv-
ing his 2013 Ford F150 west- bound.
Ms. Forbes’ vehicle re- portedly left the lane and en- tered onto the grass median. As her car was traveling through the grass median, it began to overturn in the westbound lanes as the other two cars were approaching.
Ms. Forbes’ vehicle col- lided with the two other vehi- cles. She suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Ms. Wang nor Kirk re- ported being injured in the accident, police said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigated a traffic fatality last Thursday. The accident took place on Northdale Blvd., and Silver- hill Drive.
According to police, shortly after 5 p.m., Jordan Luis Rodriguez was al- legedly talking on his cell phone and driving a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina at a high
rate of speed. Rodriguez failed to negotiate a left turn and lost control of the vehi- cle. It crossed the south- bound lanes and struck a tree on the passenger side. Ro- driguez was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
He would have celebrated his 18th birthday on Septem- ber 26th.
Suspect Who Beat And Robbed Elderly Man Arrested
Last Thursday, Tampa Police arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the beating an robbery of an eld- erly St. Petersburg resident. He was charged with armed robbery. Investigators also located the Dodge Durango shown in the surveillance video.
According to police, Harold Stewart was iden- tified through tips from the public.
According to police, Jef- fery Hardeman, 66, of St. Petersburg, was attacked in

the parking lot of the Wal- mart, 201 34th Street North. The suspect approached him and asked for the time. The
man then put Hardeman in a choke hold, threw him to the ground and began punch- ing him. The suspect then used Hardeman’s walker to continue to beat him.
The suspect took Harde- man’s wallet that contained about $600 and other per- sonal items and fled.
After the news spread, a total of $1,400 was donated to Hardeman to cover his loss. The donations came from four different individu- als and was presented to him last Thursday, officials said.
Woman Charged With Taking Over $90,000 From Elderly Man
A 38-year-old St. Petersburg woman has been arrested and is facing charges after she al- legedly gained the confidence of an elderly man and then took more than $90,000 of his money. The man died earlier this year.
Police began investigating the case after 86-year-old David Waddell died in Feb- ruary 2015. His family re- quested the investigation after discovering inconsistencies in his finances.
Police said Ms. Kari Smith was employed at a law firm as a legal assistant when she met Waddell. He was re- portedly suffering from mental illness and sought legal assis- tance.
KARI SMITH Officials said Ms. Smith
befriended the elderly man and convinced him to pay her large sums of money for clerical work she performed on his be- half.
During the course of their business relationship, Ms. Smith obtained Waddell’s
personal information, gained access to his finances, wrote checks, and transferred money to herself. On one occasion, Ms. Smith used his debit card topayforanewroofonher home, police said.
Detectives estimate that Ms. Smith took approxi- mately $90,806.24 from Waddell between July 2014 and January 2015.
Police said Waddell’s at- torney nor the law firm knew about the personal employ- ment agreement between Ms. Smith and Waddell.
She was charged with one count of exploitation of an eld- erly person and two counts of criminal use of personal infor- mation.
