As a society, Valentine’s Day is not exclusive to the young, but is celebrated by the matured as well. The difference is the lessons learned through the years.
Superintendent Charles and Mrs. De- loris Davis have per- fected the art of celebrating the holiday. And, they have had 52 years of marriage to find their happy medium.
Superintendent Davis said, “We have gone on cruises and different things through the years. But, this year, we are going to just fellowship, go out to dinner and just enjoy the day.”
He said roses are stan- dard in his household and he will find some combina- tion of flowers to express their years of marriage. “When you have been mar- ried as long as I have, you ask what the person needs.
“If I hear her say she wants something, then I’ll get it. Otherwise, I’ll just give her the money and let her do her own shopping.”
The holiday is known as the lovers holiday. And, Superintendent Davis strongly believes in love.

SUPERINTENDENT AND MRS. CHARLES DAVIS
The King of Southern Soul, Sir Charles Jones will be among the fea- tured artists on Saturday, Febru- ary 16th at The Lovers & Friends Post Valentine Concert, being held in Polk The- atre, Lakeland.
Sir Charles
Jones was born
in Akron, Ohio,
but moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where his singing career started. Sir Charles Jones taught himself how to write his own music, as well as arranging and pro- ducing it. He gives credit for having the opportunity to work under the guidance of Marvin Sease and Mel Waiters.
Sir Charles Jones is praised for his “sensuality and emotional heat.” All of his songs have a touch of smooth rhythm melodies, the cry of love, pain, and happiness. His hit songs, “Wherever I Lay My Bone, Just Can’t Let Go” and “Is Anybody Lonely,” prove why he is crowned “The King of Southern Soul.”

Too Smooth says, “Valentine’s Day is one occa- sion that couples and groups of single friends are cele- brated with a specialty love. Choose to celebrate with us at The Lovers & Friends Post Valentine Concert hosted by BET Comedian, Terry Harris with Urban Mys- tic, Wendell B. and Sir Charles Jones. It is a con- cert you don’t want to miss!”
The official after party will be held at the Rose Heights Elk Lodge in Lake- land. For tickets and more information about The Lovers & Friend Post Valen- tine Concert log onto www.polktheatre.org or call Too Smooth at 813-244- 7474.
However, he said love and commitment are two dif- ferent things. “People talk about love, you can love someone, but love is what you enjoy. It’s the commit- ment that you share that keeps you together.”
When asked how they met, Superintendent Davis said, “I saw her walking down the street and she got my attention. But when I tried to talk to her, she ignored me. So, I pursued her until she paid me some attention.”
Both Tampa natives, the couple attended the public schools of Hillsbor- ough County. They are the parents of four daughters and several grandchildren.
Superintendent Davis is the longtime sen- ior pastor of College Hill Church Of God In Christ.
A nurse and retired Hillsborough Public School District Occupa- tional Specialist, Mrs. Davis is currently an Ad- ministrator for the Child Care Center.
