Community High Noon Prayer Band Celebrates 28th Anniversary
On January 17th, the Com- munity High Noon Prayer Band celebrated their 28th Anniversary at 12 noon with a luncheon at Red Lobster
restaurant. A great event was enjoyed by Chairperson, Mary Ann Thornton; Pres- ident, Alice McCarty; Vice President, Norma Morton; and Secretary, Katherine Clark.

On January 15, 2017 the First Baptist Church of Progress Village, in coordina- tion with Hillsborough Com- munity College, sponsored a Martin Luther King, Day On, Not a Day Off/ Black History Month Essay contest. The essay topic was, “How and Why is Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Legacy of Service Important in Today’s Society?” The contest- ants, ranging from elementary to high school students, sub- mitted interesting and thought provoking essays that ad- dressed their thoughts and in- sight on Dr. King’s legacy and what it means to them and our society.
The winners were an- nounced January 15, 2017, and the first place contestants in each category recited their es- says. The winning contestants received trophies and mone- tary gift cards and Kindle Fire Tablets. Congratulations to these outstanding orators!

On January 14, 2017, the Progress Village Civic Council, First Baptist Church of Progress Village – History and Geography Ministry, Progress Village Mathematics and Liter- acy Fluency Center; Hillsbor- ough Community College and Hillsborough County Commis- sioners and Office of Neighbor- hood Relations sponsored the “Progress Village Community Circle of Service Roundup.” This was a dual purpose MLK Day of Service activity that al- lowed participants to spruce up Progress Village and give back to the community at the same time.
Volunteers from SPOTO High School, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, First Baptist Church of Progress Village and residents of Progress Village collected over seven metric tons of re- fuse. Volunteers also picked up garbage along Progress Blvd. and its adjacent empty lots.
Gently used clothing and toys were collected and do- nated to the Clothes and More Ministry. Residents and volun- teers enjoyed lively music and free hotdogs. At the end of the day, 79 exhausted volunteers congratulated one another for a job well done!
A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers and residents of Progress Village for making this effort successful!
