Someone You Know Depressed?:
Researchers Accidentally Find The Root Cause
NATIONWIDE -- According to the World Health Organiza- tion (WHO), 350 million people worldwide suffer from depres- sion. It is a leading cause of dis- ability.
One study, however, discov- ered a very important root cause for depression. Appar- ently, the problem is chronic in- flammation.
In a study of patients suffer-
ing from depression, small in- flammatory proteins called cy- tokines were found in elevated levels in depression patients.
When the body is in a state of chronic inflammation, brain cells called microglia are acti- vated that can cause anxiety and agitation.
The study likened the symp- toms of the flu to symptoms of depression. Flu, caused by in-
flammation, results in mood changes. These are some of the same characteristics of depres- sion.
The study showed that pa- tients taking anti-inflammatory drugs noticed changes in their mood, and the study found there were significant changes in their brains’ neuro-chemical circuitry.

CHAMBLEE, GA ---When Willie Calhoun, affection- ately known as “Mr. Willie”, began working for McDonald’s he was 14 years old, and Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. It was 1957 when he started his first shift at a Sandy Springs franchise. Fifty-nine years later, after working at sev- eral McDonald’s locations around metro Atlanta, he is a long-time employee of the restaurant on Peachtree Boule- vard in Chamblee. He’s been preparing food there for cus- tomers for over 20 years.
The staff and management gathered at the store on last Thursday (October 27) to cele- brate Calhoun’s 73rd birthday, and to acknowledge his long ca-
reer with the company. A cake was decorated with chocolate roses, and inscribed, “Willie, 50 years service.” A number of employees came to the party on their day off, including a few who now work at other McDon- ald’s locations.
Calhoun says he enjoys working at McDonald’s. At one time he worked seven days a week, but he has cut back to a three-day schedule. He said that most of the changes he has seen over the decades he has worked there have been improvements, and that he appreciates the owners and management have never told him he is too old to continue working. “This is a very special day for me,” he said during the celebration.
