‘Student For Life’ Continues His Educational Quest
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Several years ago, Matthew Thornton l e d a troubled life. But after turning his life around, he discovered that education would be the key to his suc- cess.
Currently a resident of New York, Thornton has attended several schools in- cluding completing courses in the medicine industry. He currently holds a nursing li- cense in New York and plans to obtain a license in Florida as well.
And, he wants to focus on the youth who are struggling with mental issues. “I can reach out to the youth here because I came from the struggle. They are in captivity in their own minds. We must break those chains in order to move on. I can deal with it because of my training.”
Thornton has a note- book filled with certificates of

completion from various in- dustries, ranging from culi- nary arts, to the medical field, to the law.
Now, he is focusing on both the medical field and the law. He is about to com- plete his paralegal studies and his ultimate goal is to be- come an attorney.
Describing himself as “a student for life,” Thornton said he has attended several schools and “I’m glad I went because I have been able to help myself.”
He said his training in the culinary arts has taught him how to eat healthy. This training also helps him teach others, especially seniors, how to better care for them- selves and improve their quality of life.
His interest in the legal profession developed from his observing how the law af- fects all of our lives. “All lives matter and I take everyone into consideration. I am pushing forward toward the future.”
During his journey, Thornton has also devel- oped and applied a new phi- losophy in life. “My philosophy is to adapt, ac- cept, make amendments, and let it go,” the 44-year-old fa- ther of five said.
Entrepreneur Offers Invention To Help Others
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Anyone who has injured his or her back knows all about the pain that comes with it. Some- times, it becomes so severe that it seems surgery may be the only solution.
Mark Winters knows about that pain. He severely in- jured his back in 1999 and was twice told he needed surgery. He declined both times.
But having his children push his legs toward his chest provided some relief. Winters said, “The Holy Spirit showed me how to design a device so I wouldn’t have to depend on anybody and that would help other people.”
Winters began building a machine for that purpose and after trial and error, created what he refers to as the Dunamis Machine. And, he created a machine that “hit every muscle and joint in the body from the neck to foot.”
Mark Winters is shown with his new invention he calls the Dunamis Machine. Dunamis is a Greek word that means some- thing dynamic, powerful.
After his mother passed away four years ago, he lost in- terest in the invention. But, in the past few months, his desire to complete it returned and he sat about improving his inven- tion.
“My brother, Pastor Michael Winters, has been preaching about tapping into the wisdom of God and it rekin- dled the fire and desire I had in me.”
He completed the prototype and it has become his third patent. He has also built 4 other prototypes.
“My brother once said, ‘in visions and movements all powerful and Almighty God doesn’t give us everything right away because we, as mortals, can’t handle it.’
“I now see this because every time I thought I was fin- ished, the Holy Spirit would add something else to it. There is no other device on the planet like it, and it’s the only one ever made that targets the five in- dustries of exercise, fitness, massage, rehab, and physical therapy,” Winters said.
A Tampa native, Winters graduated from Jefferson High School in 1987. He continued his education at Tampa Tech- nical Institute majoring in computer electronics.
Winters said he plans to market the machine and knows that it will help others who are suffering from pain.
