The 16 Most Segregated Cities In America
Detroit is the most segregated city in America. Chicago is 2nd.
Virtually every city in America has its Black areas, the remnants of redlining and restrictive covenants, and de- spite the pains of gentrifica- tion, a new report by 24/7 Wall Street suggests that seg- regation isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The report’s authors looked at cities across the Union, at their Black popula- tions and at the percentage of that population that lives in majority-black neighbor- hoods (neighborhoods where at least 4 out 5 residents are Black).
What’s the most segre- gated city in the United States?
If you’re thinking one in the South, you’re wrong.
It’s Detroit, Michigan. Almost a quarter of Detroit is Black. And a full 55.3 per- cent of its Black citizens live in majority-Black neighbor-
hoods.
Coming in at a close num-
ber two is Chicago, a city that was once America’s Black me- tropolis. 50 percent of all Black Chicagoans live in ma- jority Black neighborhoods, most on the city’s West and South Sides.
Rounding out the top three is Jackson, Mississippi, where 48.5 percent of the popula- tion is Black, and 47.7 percent of that population lives in all majority neighborhoods.
The study’s authors also tracked poverty rates in each of the cities on their list, and compared incomes of Black families to those of white
families.
Segregation coupled with
high poverty levels lead to poor education outcomes, ac- cording to the authors, who note that lower property taxes in poorer and segregated Black communities often translate to less funding for schools.
If you are curious where your city falls, the full list along with the percentage of Black people living in major- ity Black neighborhoods is below:
1. Detroit, Michigan (55.3 percent)
2. Chicago, Illinois (50.1 percent)
3. Jackson, Mississippi (47.7 percent)
4. Memphis, Tennessee (46.4 percent)
5. Cleveland, Ohio (45.4 percent)
6. New Orleans, Louisiana (43.1)
7. Buffalo, New York (43 percent)
8. Baltimore, Maryland (41.6 percent)
9. Birmingham, Alabama (39.4 percent)
10. Saint Louis, Missouri (39.3 percent)
11. Milwaukee, Wisconsin (36.1 percent)
12. Philadelphia, Pennsyl- vania (32.3 percent)
13. Baton Rouge, Louisiana (31.7 percent)
14. Atlanta, Georgia (31.3 percent)
15. Dayton, Ohio (29.6 percent)
16. Washington, D.C. (29.1 percent)
O. J. Simpson will likely get his $600,000 pension when re- leased from prison.
The Juice is about to be loose and he won’t have to give up his NFL pension, ac- cording to some media re- ports.
O. J. Simpson was granted parole last Thursday during a televised hearing, where he proclaimed himself rehabilitated and ready to re- enter society after nine years in prison on a 2008 armed robbery conviction.
He was arrested for trying to retrieve sports memora- bilia he said had been stolen from him.
When he leaves the Love- lock Correctional Center in Nevada in the fall, he will have earned up to $600,000
from his National Football League pension, according to a calculation done by ESPN.
Although the Goldman family won a $33.5 million civil suit against Simpson after the NFL star was found not guilty of murdering their son, Ron Goldman along with Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994,” they cannot get any compensation because NFL pensions are protected by state law.
He’ll also be able to keep his house in Florida, where he told the parole board he would like to live. Florida has a state homestead exemp- tion.
Ray Tensing fatally shot Sam Dubose in 2015.
CINCINNATI, OH — Ac- cording to USA Today, Ohio is through with Ray Tens- ing.
The voluntary manslaugh- ter and murder charges against former University of Cincinnati police officer were formally dismissed Monday.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Leslie Ghiz dropped the charges with prejudice, meaning this case against Tensing is dismissed permanently.
However, U. S. Attorney Ben Glassman has said his office is looking into federal civil rights violations against Tensing. He was charged in the July 2015 shooting death of unarmed black motorist Sam DuBose during a traffic stop in Mount Auburn.
