Lakeland AKA Chapter Attends Biennial
International Conference In Atlanta
Members from the Omi- cron Kappa Omega Chapter joined 22,000 college-educated professional women world- wide at the Georgia World Con- gress Center in Atlanta, GA, July 9-14, 2016, to celebrate the 67th Biennial International Convention of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Its theme, “Launching New Dimensions of Service: Cele- brating a Legacy of Sisterhood and Worldwide Impact,” in- vited members to participate in 23 moments of service throughout the city, with a col- lection of 40,000 pillow case dresses made for little girls in Africa, and thousands of back- packs for students.
Omicron Kappa Omega Chapter members experienced memorable highlights. One was the “Silver, Golden and Di- amond Star Luncheon.”
A silver star is a sister who has been a member for 25 years. The Chapter’s 2016 Sil- ver Star inductees included: Sylvia Blackmon-Roberts, Cheryl Joe, Viesta Skipper, and Laurenia Jackson.
A golden star is a sister with 50 years of service. Two of the chapter’s golden plus stars, Latha Murphy-Speed and Albertha Whitley-Tabron were in attendance.
Another highlight was “The 16th Annual Legacy Dinner.” Four beautiful mother-daugh- ter teams were recognized: Latha Speed and Willana
Speed-Anthony, Charlene Richardson-Brinson and Gabrille Brinson-Allen, Sylvia Blackmon-Roberts and Janae’ Roberts; and Yvonne McShay and Lisa H. Bennett.
Continuing the highlights,
Sylvia Blackmon-Roberts,
International Connection Com- mittee Chairman, presented on the Public Policy Forum: “Take ACTION and Be the Voice.” Connection is the advocacy, so- cial justice, and voting arm of the sorority. Roberts also pre- sented a workshop.
Chapter members attend- ing the memorable conference were: Sharon Miller, Sharon McGriff, Tonja Clifton, Vivian Under- wood, Sandra King- Williams, Bettye Goodwine, Natika Christo- pher, Meesha Downing, Lashanna Joe, Dell Quary, La Trice Moore, Sheilitha Williams, Katina Dailey, Vette Moten and Deva Simmons.
The esteemed International President, Dorothy Buck- hanan Wilson, presented monetary gifts to eight national organizations: the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), American Heart Association, and Alzheimer’s being a few. She stated, “We are a beacon of light through academic and professional pathways.

Polk County Public Schools New Administrators
Congratulations to all new Polk County Public Schools Administrators!!! During the July 26th meeting, the Polk County School Board approved the follow- ing appointments by Super- intendent Jacqueline M. Speed along with Mr. George Sexton and a host of family and friends were elated as their daughter, Bri- enne Iva’ Clayton and her groom, Thierry Pierre were joined together as one in Holy Matrimony. The beautiful ceremony took place at the Bartow Civic Centerat5p.m.inthe evening. May the blessings of the Lord be upon this union. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Pierre!!!
