Back in the late 1970’s a sporting rivalry started
between Ei, Shannon and Ecco, Dundalk. Initially it
was soccer but it evolved to golf and encompassed all
the GE operations in Ireland.
An annual golf outing was held and there was a
team element as well as individual competition. But
after just under 50 years, the final outing was held at
Shannon GC (where it all began) on 21st June. There
was a big turnout for the golf and for the dinner held
at Bunratty Manor.
Several of the original guys were in attendance---Jim
Rafferty, Mike Neary, Larry Murtagh, Walter
Kitchen, Mick Guinee.
There was much reminiscing at the dinner---of the
golf, the different courses played, the hotels that
hosted the annual event and above all the craic. At the
dinner, Mick Guinee showed a reel of photographs,
and such was the nostalgia generated that a
memory-stick was subsequently sent to everyone!
There was also a touch of sadness as we remembered
those colleagues who have passed. May they RIP.
Special ‘Thanks’ must go to Jim Rafferty and John
Sinnott who have been the organizational duo behind
this event over the years.
All good things come to an end but we are left with
our memories of fun time!
2025 marked another hugely successful year
for our Astro Soccer tournament, with 18 teams
participating in ferociously competitive and
entertaining matches. Ultimately, it came down to
a final matchup between Bay 47A and Bay 44,
with Bay 47A coming out victorious on the day.
The ‘Odd Sock’ Cycle is held every
year in aid of Down Syndrome
Charity. Ei is always one of the
supporting sponsors. This year’s
event was held on 30th March.
Ei cyclists regularly take part and this
year was particularly poignant, as one
of our cycling colleagues was no longer
with us---Ian Dunn having passed away
unexpectantly in late February.
Among those taking part this year was
Idelia O’Malley, Ian’s Partner, Siobhan
O’Malley, Ian’s stepdaughter, Ian’s
regular cycling buddies, Peter Murphy
and Mick Guinee also participated.
Trevor organised a Gym Competition during the year.
It consisted of the Longest Plank, Most Push-ups, Most
Pull-ups, Fastest 1K Run, Fastest 1K Row & Fastest 1K Cycle
