In 1933, Matthew Maliszewski was the only embalmer/funeral director in Manville. Back in the 30’s layouts were done in the house so Mr. Maliszewski was based out of a small building on Main Street and did his work in the homes of the bereaved. As the population grew in the 1940’s, so did his business in Manville, so he formed a partnership with Adam Fucillo. Together, they purchased a building on Main Street which came to be known as Maliszewski & Fucillo Funeral Home.
In 1954, Mr. Maliszewski sold his portion of the business to Mr. Fucillo. Not long after, Mr. Fucillo was joined by his son- in-law Jerry Warren, who at the time was a school teacher. In the early 1960’s the building was relocated to its present site and appropriately named Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home. Mr. Warren’s untimely death prompted Mr. Fucillo to run the business alone, and he did so until his death in 1979 at the age of 87.
It was at this time, John “Jack” Zalewski purchased the business and operated it with his wife, Karen, by his side for the first year. Ironically, Mr. Zalewski was
given his practical examination in 1964 by Mr. Maliszewski, who at the time was a member of the New Jersey State Board. Over the years, Jack was blessed to have hired many dedicated licensees: Vincent Marazzo, Raymond Visotski, Ronald M. Jasinski, Daniel M.Erickson and Stephanie Nolan.
Following in their father’s footsteps, Jack’s three children joined the family business; daughter, Sharon Ann Zalewski in 1986, sons, Kevin S. Zalewski in 1990 and John R. Zalewski, Jr.in 1989.
In April of 1995, Mr. Zalewski fulfilled his dream of expanding to a second location when he opened Countryside Funeral Home in Three Bridges, New Jersey.
In 2007, George Rocco Seminara, Jr. joined our firms and continues to embrace our family values and professionalism. As of January 1st 2019, we welcomed Mr. Seminara’s step-daughter, Taylor Marie Bryan onto our staff where she will be serving her apprenticeship and hopefully find a bright future amongst us.
