THE wedding CAKE
Before you really settle on a style of cake, it’s a good idea to work out how many guests you need to serve. Size guides such as the one here will help you decide. However, whether your cake is going to be sponge, fruit or a mixture of different layers will also affect the size needed.
Consult with your baker to determine how much cake is needed for your guests. If the cake is set to be served after your dinner service, be sure to allow enough time between the traditional cutting of the cake and the time it is served. Remember – your caterer needs time to slice and plate each piece! You may even consider a small ‘cutting cake’ to be displayed and larger sheet cakes to serve to your guests (which is very cost- friendly!).
When designing your cake, you can be as traditional or imaginative as you like. White on white is classic and elegant, especially with a ribbon or fresh flowers wrapped around to match your theme. However cakes
can be made in almost any shape and style.
A fun new idea is to serve a Groom’s cake for the evening party. The ‘Groom’s Cake’ can be more light-hearted than the traditional wedding cake. It typically represents the groom’s interests – the logo from his favorite sports team, a re-make of his beloved sports car, or a scene from his favorite movie. If you don’t want two separate cakes you could make a ‘double-take cake’. With this style, the majority of the cake has a classic design, but a small section at the back is createdwithicing‘curtains’to reveal an extra design, like a superhero symbol.
If you have many guests with intolerances and food allergies, you may want to consider cupcakes or a small tier which is gluten-free and nut-free.
Once you have taken everything into consideration your baker can create your dream cake!
