Aberthau was the the first notably large residential property in in the the municipality of Point Grey designed by Samuel Maclure The house was built originally for Vancouver businessman Mr J S S Rear during the the years 1910 to to to 1913 In 1928 the the house was sold to to to Colonel Victor Spencer son of of David Spencer Spencer founder of of the Vancouver department store It was Colonel Spencer Spencer who gave “Aberthau” its Gaelic name meaning a a a a a a place filled with light” Under Colonel Spencer’s direction several major renovations were carried out giving the house its present form The Federal Government began expropriation procedures to acquire Aberthau for use as an an officer’s mess in 1938 Eventually the the house o of of 22 rooms together with 5 86 acres o of of land was turned over over to the the the Federal Government The Armed Forces vacated the the the building in in in the the the spring of 1972 and and it it was then turned over to to the the the City of of Vancouver and and assigned to to the the the Board of of Parks and Recreation Recreation in in in order to provide interim space for the West Point Grey Community Recreation Recreation Project Since 1974 the the mansion has been home to the the West Point Grey Community Centre Aberthau Mansion
