Our History
Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home traces its founding to May of 1916, when James S. Taggart opened as James S. Taggart, Mortician, at his first location on East Second Street in Bound Brook. As business needs changed, future sites would include storefronts on Maiden Lane. In 1922, he opened a formal funeral home on East High Street. That became the location of the business for over eighty years.
Roland D. Chamberlain joined Taggart as a partner in 1951. The firm name was changed to Taggart - Chamberlain Funeral Home. After Taggart’s death in 1957, Mr. Chamberlain became sole proprietor, but retained the Taggart legacy.
Roland’s son, Mark, became a licensed funeral director in 1974. His son Paul was licensed in 1979. Mark and Paul partnered with their father to run the family business in 1983. Following Roland’s retirement in 1985, Mark and Paul took over the daily operations of the business.
L. Edward Hagan had managed Conroy Funeral Home, in Bound Brook, for twenty-three years, until 1998, when the owners decided to sell the firm to a national corporation. Having lived and raised his family in Bound Brook, and shunning the corporate world, Ed wanted to continue personally serving his hometown and the families that he had come to know. In 1998, Ed joined the Chamberlains at Taggart - Chamberlain Funeral Home.
Ed and his daughter, Joanna, also a licensed funeral director, purchased a property at 225 Mountain Avenue in 1999. They began a building renovation and expansion project that was completed in 2003. A partnership between the Hagan’s
and the Chamberlain’s was formed at that time. The building housing Taggart - Chamberlain Funeral Home was sold, and Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home, LLC., opened for operations just around the corner at the current Mountain Avenue address.
Conroy Funeral Home closed its doors and ceased operations in May of 2004. Since that time Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home has been the sole funeral home in Bound Brook.
Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home continues the tradition of caring by serving the families of Bound Brook and its surrounding communities with dignity, moving forward into its second century as a local, family owned and operated business.
