THANKS TO OUR BRAVE FIRE FIGHTERS
Over a number of days in September, the great fires of Sierra Bermeja destroyed 10.000 hectares of land and extended over a 41 kilometre perimeter. It caused such deplorable suffering of both humans and animals. It kept over a thousand families out of their homes, villages and claimed the life of brave Carlos Martínez Haro, a 44 year old forest firefighter from Almeria.
Firefighters, the Andalusian Forest Fire Extinction Service (Infoca), emergency services, plus over
41 planes and helicopters worked tirelessly to prevent more devastation to this area with drones to view regions in determining and intervening in various areas to control the blaze. Some images looked like an apocalyptic movie.
Eventually rainfall helped to turn the tables and get the fire under control.
Juanma Moreno, President of the Junta de Andalucia, has said that all the evidence the terrible fire pointed to arson. It was believed that that the fire services had found a few main starting points. Everything indicated that this was intentional, but authorities started
a major investigation to confirm this theory and Juanma Moreno called for tougher penalties on arson.
We would like to express our thanks and appreciation to all the brave firefighters, the different fire departments, volunteers and emergency services for their hard work, dedication and commitment for putting their lives at risk to make our wonderful Coast a safe place for us.
Our condolences to family, friends and colleagues of our fallen hero Carlos Martinez.
