Before the Mammogram
1. Schedule at the right time: Try to schedule your mammogram about one week after your
period, when your breasts are least tender.
2. Avoid deodorants and lotions: Don’t apply deodorant, powder, lotion, or perfume under
your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam. These can appear as white spots
on the X-ray.
3. Wear a two-piece outfit: Since you’ll need to undress from the waist up, wearing a top
and bottom makes it easier.
4. Discuss changes with your doctor: Let your doctor know if you’ve noticed any new
lumps, pain, or changes in your breasts.
5. Inform about past procedures: If you've had previous breast surgeries or implants,
inform the technician beforehand for tailored screening.
During the Mammogram
1. Communicate discomfort: Mammograms can be uncomfortable due to the compression of breast tissue, but if it becomes painful, inform the technician immediately.
2. Stay still: It’s important to stay still during the imaging to get clear and accurate results. 3. Relax and breathe: Try to relax during the process and take deep breaths if you feel
tense.
After the Mammogram
1. Expect mild soreness: Some women experience mild soreness or bruising, which usually fades after a day or two.
2. Wait for results: Ask how and when you'll receive your results, and follow up if needed. 3. Know the importance of regular screenings: Stay on top of annual mammograms if
you're over 40 or as recommended by your doctor based on personal risk factors. General Advice
1. Keep a record: Bring your previous mammogram results if you’re going to a new facility, as comparisons help with accuracy.
2. Know your family history: Be aware of any family history of breast cancer and inform your healthcare provider.
3. Don’t delay screenings: Even if you're busy, prioritizing your health is essential, especially for early detection of potential issues.
These tips will help make your mammogram experience smoother and ensure you're well- prepared for the exam.
