When my father retired, his hobby was Civil War reenactments ... Imagine a costume party with canon fire and horses, held multiple times yearly...
And he was into the whole nine yards.. The uniforms, boots, rifles, canteens.etc.
There was nothing he wouldn’t invest in, if it added to the experience and no event was too far to travel, to participate in.
I remember listening to him talk about upcoming events, the friends he’d reconnect with.. The conversations and debates they’d have over some “overlooked” truth not generally written in our history books. And afterwards parting ways, vowing to meet again the following year. After a few years of him mentioning it to me and given me open invitation after open invitation... I finally went to watch one...
Once I reached their encampment, it was like stepping back into the past...
Every participant had uniforms and gear so authentic, if you saw them walking down the street at night, you’d swear you were looking at a ghost.
I watched my father at this event, how he packed his sack, cooked food over an outside open fire, marched in formation ... Falling (faking being mortally wounded).
And as the event would close to an end, he’d get up, dust off walk towards us with this huge smile... and I began to understand...
This is what “Freedom” looks like. Living your best possible life...Surrounding by friends and family and doing something you totally love...
Work everyday toward your dream...
The dream is free... The hustle is what cost... Make it Happen...
I'll see you at the top...
