PLANNING
More than 300 community members representing themselves, their families, their neighborhoods and local organizations volunteered their time to develop a community plan to proactively address these issues head on. Representatives participated from organizations ranging from law enforcement, faith community, local and state, and federal government, business, primary, secondary and post-secondary education, literacy providers, philanthropy, service organizations, healthcare, human service agencies, and more.
As a result of six months of facilitated dialogue, educational opportunities, local expert insight, baseline research reports, and national best practice reviews the volunteer planning teams developed recommendations to increase literacy for individuals across the lifespan from birth to senior citizens.
This collaborative effort will include Early Childhood Literacy
K-12 Literacy
Opportunity Youth
Post-secondary Education Adult Literacy
Financial Literacy
English Language Learners Family Literacy
Cultural Literacy
Workforce Skill Development Fine Arts
Health Literacy
Digital Literacy
The recommendations, across the lifespan, were prioritized by all of the planning participants with a final selection of Family Literacy and Youth Coaching, Tutoring and Mentoring as year one implementation focus areas for the greater Literacy Network.
As the Literacy Network transitions, in 2015, into implementation efforts these two areas will be the primary focus of the collaborative effort. As the Network’s capacity grows, more pieces of the Community Plan will be moved forward for implementation.
