Policy
Flint & Genesee Literacy Network Confidentiality Policy
The role of the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network (FGLN) in the community can sometimes result in the acquisition of information that is considered privileged or confidential. To safeguard FGLN’s integrity as a responsible and trusted community leader, FGLN subscribes to a confidentiality policy.
The members of FGLN’s Steering Committee, staff, consultants, and volunteers shall not engage in discussion with or otherwise disclose information to third parties concerning confidential information. A good rule of thumb is: if you’re not sure whether something is confidential or not, don’t disclose it.
Statements made by FGLN Steering Committee members or staff members during FGLN proceedings are confidential. Decisions of the FGLN Steering Committee shall not be disclosed without appropriate authorization. Typically, the Executive Director and/or the Steering Committee Chair will be authorized to disclose Network decisions on behalf of the Network.
During SC meetings, from time to time, members may become privy to sensitive information about community partners, funders, financial information, etc. Such information is to be treated with the highest standards of confidentiality and should not be disclosed to others not serving on the Steering Committee.
Applicability
• Employees and Consultants. All FGLN employees and consultants are required to sign this confidentiality policy as a condition of employment, a copy of which will be kept on file by the Executive Director. Any employee or consultant who purposely or through failure to exercise reasonable care, causes confidential information to be disclosed, will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination, even if he or she does not actually benefit from the disclosed information. The obligation to keep information confidential continues even after an employee or consultant ceases to work for the FGLN.
• Steering Committee Members. All FGLN Steering Committee members are required to abide by and sign this confidentiality policy. The obligation to keep information confidential continues even after a Steering Committee member ceases to be an active volunteer of FGLN.
