Message from Executive Director, Ja’Nel Jamerson
Dear Partners,
We at the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network are looking toward the future — both to the opportunities and challenges of our community — and are committed to critically examining how we can better support our partners to achieve our collective vision of a Flint and Genesee County where literacy is no longer a barrier. Since the network was established in 2014, our partnerships have resulted in significant advancements in local literacy services. However, we understand that our past achievements are only as valuable as the vision they inspire in us for the future.
The Network's staff and Steering Committee have undergone an extensive effort to envision the goals of the network over the next three years, to clarify our mission and vision, and to establish the guiding principles by which our work will be achieved. These efforts resulted in this 2019-2022 strategic plan, which sets out aspirations for our shared work ahead.
At the core of our plan is the belief that early literacy outcomes are essential to the success of our entire community and that families, more than anyone else, are critical partners in achieving such outcomes. It is with this understanding that our plan ambitiously aims to instigate the development of two-generational literacy interventions, to increase kindergarten readiness, and to develop a countywide literacy agenda. These three strategic priorities and their corresponding goals, together, provide FGLN with a much-needed framework that will guide our partnerships and collaborations going forward.
The foundation of our network is based on the trust, dedication, and enthusiasm of our partners. It is on these elements that we hope to launch this new strategic plan, which will continue to influence changes in our community's literacy landscape. As Executive Director, I am grateful to the dozens of partners who made contributions to the planning effort. It will take each of us, working and innovating together, to achieve the ambitious goals detailed in this plan.
