Chapter 14 (119) GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
and she brought it to her mother. John’s disciples came, took the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard this, he with- drew from that place in a boat and went to a deser- ted place in private. When the crowds heard about this, they followed him on foot from the cities. esus went out and saw that there was a great crowd. *He had compassion on them and he- aled their sick. When evening came, his dis-
ciples came to him and said, “This place is desert- ed, and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” They replied, “We only have here five loaves and two fish!” Jesus said, “Bring them to me.” Hav- ing instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish. Looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples distributed it to the multitudes. And so, everyone ate and was sat- isfied. His disciples gathered up twelve baskets full of what remained left over from the broken pieces.
