n those days, *John the Baptist was preach- ing in the wilderness of Judea, saying: “Re- pent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!” This is the one whom Isaiah the prophet had spoken about in these words: The voice
of one crying in the wilderness. Make ready the way of the Lord! Make his paths straight! It was peculiar about John that he wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. Soon, people from Jerusalem, all of Judea and the entire region around the Jordan river went out to him. They were baptized by John in the Jordan, confessing their sins. But when John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to receive his baptism, he told them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore, bring forth fruit worthy of repentance! Do not think (that you can say) to yourself: We have Abraham as our fa- ther! For I tell you that from these stones, God is able to raise up children to Abraham! Even now, the axe lies at the root of the trees! Therefore, ev- ery tree that does not produce good fruit is to be cut down and cast into the fire. I indeed baptize
