For this reason, Pilate went out to them and as- ked, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.” At this, Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” Then, the Jews told him, “It is not lawful for us to put any- one to death!” This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken, by which he had indicated by what kind of death he would die. So Pilate went back into the Praetorium. Having called Jesus, he asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I?
