a hundred Roman pounds. Then, they took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spic- es, according to the burial custom of the Jews. Now, there was a garden at the place where Jesus had been crucified. In the garden, there was a tomb in which no one had ever yet been laid. Then, be- cause it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

On the next day (which was the day) after the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate and said, “Lord,
we remember what that deceiver said when he was still alive: After three days, I will rise again. There- fore, give orders that the tomb be made secure un- til the third day; for fear that his disciples may come at night, steal him away, and then tell the people: He is risen from the dead! This last deception would be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.” And so, they went off in order to make the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting a watch.
