Still, each line drawn in an icon distinguishes the various forms (garments, facial features, buildings, etc.), thus giving each form a specific “hypostasis.” George Kordis insists that each of lines work harmo- niously together to give the whole composition meaning. When drawn well, the lines generate move- ment and energy. The light and the line, consequent- ly, are complimentary.
The Byzantine tradition has certain principles that alter the historical evidences. The eschaton, or the ultimate fulfillment of creation, respects history by not merely copying it, but by transforming it. In eschatological understanding, the future is not a mere repetition of the past or a continuation of the present, but a complete and radical transformation of all that has come before.
However, we have to reflect on the future of the iconography. How can it profit from Kordis’ unique visual language?
The world of the future, even of today, is wider and more pluralistic than the traditional East-West division of it. Unless we act quickly in the direction of this visual language, we shall soon face the loss of theological sensitivity and discernment in matters essential to our faith. Understanding visual language and creation of an analogous visual reality will hope- fully open up new avenues of painting.
Iconographers are there to remind us of the im- portance of tradition, but also of its creative re-re- ception. A “faithful creativity” is an antipode to con- servativism which eradicates inventiveness.
