bodying meticulous contempla-
tion and austere philosophy, with
an expression of perfection that
permits no void or innocent joy
from any error. The tonal notes of
the garment resemble the dead
leaves of autumn—“les feuilles
mortes se ramassent à la pelle”—
as if echoing some Mozart score,
where beneath an outburst of joy
lies the most noble sorrow.
