it. Social distinctions—rich and poor, strong and weak—are
likewise to be integrated, not excluded. And spiritual gifts,
though varied, are all given for the building up of the one Body.
Against this vision, spiritual elitism remains a constant
temptation. It appeared already in Corinth and has never dis-
appeared. But an ecclesiology of communion excludes every
form of superiority. No gift is self-sufficient; no ministry exists
in isolation.
Thus, the Church reveals in her very life what God is in His
being: unity in diversity, and diversity in unity—a communion
where the many do not threaten the one, but manifest it.
