Thus, the present situation remains complex. Relations be-
tween the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the other Orthodox
Churches are still marked by historical prejudices and theo-
logical weakness, yet they are also developing in new ways.
Freed from former constraints, the Churches increasingly feel
their need for one another and, with it, the need for a centre—
a Church that can act as a common point of reference, as a
coordinator, and even as a spokesman of a united Orthodoxy.
 If this is realized in a spirit of communion, without ethnic
prejudice and with respect for the integrity of each Church,
then Orthodoxy will be able to fulfil its mission in a convinc-
ing way in the world today.
