expressions of the same ecclesial mystery. Confessionalism, by
contrast, reduces theology to the identification with certain
statements and deprives it of its true ecumenical character.
This is why confessionalism, though historically under-
standable, proves inadequate for the life of Orthodoxy. The
greatest contribution the Orthodox can make to Christian
unity is to insist that salvation does not come through belong-
ing to a confessional body, but through incorporation into the
concrete ecclesial community, the Church; and theology exists
only insofar as it points to this mystery of salvation.
