Finally, Orthodoxy must play a decisive role in the unity of
the Church. Its voice is of vital importance if the unity of
Christianity is to embrace the fullness of the Eastern tradition.
For this to happen, Orthodoxy must open itself to the chal-
lenges of our time, move beyond sterile conservatism, and
deepen the effort to “re-receive” its tradition in light of con-
temporary issues. Any future contribution of Orthodoxy is
inseparable from the quest for Church unity, for only through
a united Church can Christianity speak meaningfully to the
needs and aspirations of humanity.
