When language is subjected to the demands of utility, it is simpli-
fied, reduced, stripped of its richness. At the same time, it be-
comes subordinated to more “useful” languages that dominate
global communication. The deeper question, therefore, is not
linguistic survival, but whether we accept utility as the supreme
cultural principle.
The question of national sovereignty is more complex. His-
tory shows that cultural identity does not depend entirely on the
nation-state. Empires, diasporas, and multi-ethnic realities have
all sustained strong identities. The nation-state itself is, in many
ways, a modern construct. If cultural identity is to endure, it
must be distinguished from political structures and cultivated as
a living reality that transcends them.
Religion, however, touches the deepest level of identity. It has
always shaped cultures, whether acknowledged or not. In the
modern world, there is a tendency to marginalize religion in the
name of neutrality or progress. Yet this is neither realistic nor
beneficial. Religion, when it remains true to its nature, can offer
a vision of unity that does not abolish difference. It can reveal a
form of globality rooted not in uniformity, but in communion.
This is particularly true of Orthodoxy. Through its under-
standing of the person, it offers a way of being that embraces the
other without fear, that unites without erasing distinction. It
speaks the truth in love, not in opposition, and does not identify
itself with any national or political form, but seeks to transfigure
culture from within.
And yet, Orthodoxy itself faces challenges. Its organization
along national lines can obscure its universal character. At times
it seeks influence through worldly means, risking secularization;
at other times it withdraws from history, neglecting its responsi-
bility toward the world. Both tendencies weaken its cultural wit-
ness.
