harshness or meaningless technological prolongation of dy-
ing. Unreserved approval of euthanasia may open the door to
grave abuses against personal freedom and may elevate the
avoidance of suffering into the supreme good for which life
itself is sacrificed. Between these dangers, neither ethics nor
law can provide absolute guarantees.
We remain at the beginning of this journey. The Church
must remain open to dialogue, listening carefully, refusing
simplifications, and protecting above all that which both med-
icine and theology are called to serve: the human person, the
image of God.
