sincere and shared search for truth. As things stand, this does
not seem immediately promising. Yet it appears inevitable.
The pressing existential issues common to all humanity are
growing in urgency. The accelerating trend toward globaliza-
tion and the increasing awareness of ecological threats will
soon bring to the forefront the deepest and most universal
human concerns. Under the pressure of these challenges, re-
ligions will be forced to open themselves beyond their closed
identities, to connect their past with the future—not only their
own future, but also that of others. On this foundation, a pro-
found and sincere interfaith dialogue will not only become
possible; it will already have begun.
