gift, a distinct calling, a particular way of being. This diversity
is not a threat to communion—it is its condition.
This diversity embraces every dimension of human exis-
tence. Natural differences—such as race, age, and sex—are not
abolished but transfigured within communion. Social distinc-
tions—rich and poor, strong and weak—are not grounds for
exclusion but are gathered into a common life. Likewise, the
variety of spiritual gifts—teaching, healing, service—forms
the richness of the Body.
All are needed, and each is needed as different.
For this reason, every form of exclusion or superiority con-
tradicts the very nature of the Church. Spiritual elitism, which
tempted even the early communities, remains a constant dan-
ger. Communion cannot coexist with the idea that some are
sufficient unto themselves, or that others are dispensable.
